Telesurgery trials a success

Imagine if surgeons could be transported into operating theatres virtually. That’s exactly what the recent trials between University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough have achieved.

Healthcare technology company, Proximie, has teamed up with Vodafone to pilot 5G remote surgery assistance and training in cancer care. Their technologies enable participants to interact with surgeons and be in the room from anywhere in the world. Via live video, they can demonstrate with precise directions during the operation, and overlay notes, sketches and anatomical diagrams. The technology is already being used for remote training with Proximie’s platform connecting nurses in Cardiff to remote consultants who can oversee surgical procedures. This empowers clinicians to share skills, while reducing variation in treatment which in turn improves post-op patient outcomes.
