Smart ways to tackle loneliness

Maximising personal independence is the secret to increasing confidence and quality of life for disabled people, as well as reducing loneliness among the vulnerable in our society.

For many people, particularly those who are vulnerable and disabled, the pandemic has increased feelings of isolation and loneliness. It’s widely recognised that giving people practical support to live independently and more safely can improve their quality of life and self-confidence.

Vodafone teamed up with the mental health charity Mencap. We equipped 30 Supported Living homes with smart devices including lighting, locks and security cameras. These are all controlled using the My Life app, which was designed with feedback from residents and their support workers.

Vodafone supplied the Internet of Things (IoT) devices and all the connectivity kit needed. As a result, 75% of residents said their quality of life improved, while 2 in 3 people said it helped them complete everyday tasks quicker and easier.
